Portable Buildings For The People On The Move
A portable building is a testament to how far thinking mankind has become. In the olden days, buildings of any sort were, hardy and could not be easily dismantled if the need arose. However today the situation is totally different. There is a growing demand for temporary and easily shifted accommodation, whether tit is as simple as an outdoor toilet or as complex as a refugee shelter in terms of size. Nowadays the utility of the temporary building lies in the fact that it is movable. In the olden days, only tents and caravans could be termed as portable homes. Portable buildings are a huge industry today and it is a familiar sight to see trucks or cranes hauling a portable building from one site to another.
To enumerate the enormous number of uses that portable buildings have is not possible. A general outlook at oft used portable buildings are temporary offices at building sites, guard cabins, disaster shelters , changing rooms, toilets at rural sites or playing fields and the like. In some places classrooms are also accommodated in portable buildings with a toilet and partition wall so as to accommodate the burgeoning student population. Most high rises are built over an extended time frame and portable buildings are the answer to the need for offices, storage of expensive raw material and even temporary accommodation for workers. These cabins or cubicles are sometimes stacked one on top of the other and connected by a metal stairway so as to create more working room without extending space sideways.1
Most portable buildings focus on the utility rather than the aesthetics of design. They are generally rectangular or cuboid with either flat or domed roofs and are usually made of either metal or some other tough material that can withstand weather variabilities. However, nowadays there is growing market for portable buildings that look more at home in their surroundings rather than being used purely for mere functionality. However the cost effectiveness is questionable because the price automatically rises when more features are added to the portable building. These are usually sensible houses with all the basic amenities including linoleum flooring, kitchen, solar powered heaters, proper bathrooms and internet and T.V connections. These make a great deal of sense in terms of choice when the location is not suitable for ordinary habitation. Relief shelters, disaster prone areas and rural settings would benefit from these portable buildings. Especially since no foundation is required to set up the portable building, the time factor is reduced. These portable buildings are fairly strong and can be shipped to the most remote and inaccessible places using either container shipments or can be airlifted by helicopter, depending on the size.
Portable buildings are a sensible solution for immediate housing which can be either temporary or semi-permanent. Although they seem utilitarian they are quite comfortable and most importantly safe to use in most places which are disaster prone or otherwise.
